On Monday the primary school chess calendar climaxes with the Shropshire Primary School Chess Championships Grand Final. 4 teams emerged victorious in their zonals to reach this stage.
St Laurence in Ludlow are the 2-time defending champions and will be looking to make it a hatrick. The team scored 20/20 in the Southen Zonal and so are clearly not taking any prisoners.
St Mary’s (Shawbury) have made big strides since last year with CSC chess tuition provided by their coach Glyn Pugh. They will be strong contenders for the title. Chess has thrived so much in the school that their B team also managed to qualify for the finals, an unprecedented feat.
Our hosts are Captain Webb Primary School. New to the chess scene this year they will be looking to cause an upset.
