Shrewsbury, as clear underdogs in this match, pulled off a surprise win against a Telepost B side which included their A-team's highly graded top two boards.   Board 1 Nigel Ferrington was surprised to be  facing a Stonewall Dutch Defence and lost a pawn early on and never really got back into the game.  On two, Francis Best launched a fierce attack against Richard Bryant's Sicilian Defence and came agonisingly close to a  win but agreed to a draw when his clock ran down to just a couple of minutes.  Dan Lockett's favourite Exchange Variation of the Ruy Lopez netted the point against Peter Crean but only after some intricate manouevring after he won Q for a R.   Ian Davies struggled with material down but kept plugging away and gained the draw when both clocks were close to running down.
